Interview with Gus Fine Art: The Intellectual Photographer
By Mohamed Amine Mokcheh1- Tell us a bit about your personal life…
About me, I can tell little, I live in Spain, in the Balearic Islands, married and with a beautiful 3 years old daughter my dear wife and my best friend, my dog, Ros. We live in the Sierra de Tramuntana in a country house, a small and quiet village, far from the city. It is really a wonderful life.
2- Were your parents supportive about you wanting to become a photographer?
No, the truth is that my parents were humble workers who had a butcher’s shop, if they supported me in my studies, up to the University and in whatever I tried to do they always advised me, I am very proud of them and the education and principles they instilled in me.
3- Was there anything specific that you can remember that made you want to become a photographer?
I always liked to read a lot, I was a very restless boy, I liked to go to the library, see works of art by great painters, even try to paint, but it was very bad. One day my father left me his camera, an old Kodak, there I began to understand that if I did not know how to paint, I could create with images, I think it was the beginning of everything, those moments with my father’s camera.
4- Did your schooling affect your creative development in any way?
I suppose that yes, I always liked to read a lot, to see cinema, art, museums, in the Institute I already chose to go by the branch of letters where we studied to the classic Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Chinese, etc and every trimester was forced to read a book and soon to count our interpretation of him. My interpretations were a little different from my classmates, I always let out what my mind imagined.

5- Tell us about your favorite exposure style…
I don’t really have a favorite style, I try to be as multidisciplinary as possible in what I like, Creative Editions and photographic manipulation, sometimes a scene makes me think of a multi-exposure and other times the same scene I imagine as a dark image, full of mystery. Then, other images come out of my mind and my dreams, sometimes I think for days, even weeks, about what I want to do, I take notes, sketch, another day I vary the sketch, so until I reach my final result.
6- How did you light the picture?
I don’t use any light source other than natural light; I adapt the parameters of the camera to what I want to achieve. Although it is true that I am now doing tests and things in the studio with flashes and lightpainting.
7- Over the years, did you ever encounter famous people who were very difficult to shoot?
Not really, I have coincided in places with “so-called famous people” and I never took a picture of them, they do not arouse any interest for me.
8- How much do you research your subjects before photographing them?
It depends, if it is on the street walking, I can investigate little, it is spontaneous, when I make some landscape in infrared or normal photography if I usually look in google maps locations or possible planes to look for the best, actually this type of photos I share them very little.
In my Creative Editions I sometimes read a little about the concept that goes through my mind, for example in the series “The man and the elements” I read a lot about climate change and deforestation to create it.
9- What camera were you shooting with?
In this moment my equipment is all Canon, I have been already about 12 years with Canon, I use a Canon EOS R and also a Canon EOS RP modified for infrared photography, to full spectrum.

Both share objectives, all Canon also, several fixed and some zoom, for the infrared camera, the EOS RP I have filters for three objectives of different NM, from 580 to 910
10- Regarding the transition from film to digital – when did it happen for you?
My first digital camera was a Nikon Coolpix, I bought it in the late 90’s, I discovered a new world, really for me the transition from analog to digital was a big step
11- What was the first digital cameras you started using?
Well I answered you in the previous question, a Nikon Coolpix, then a Pentax Optio and already in 2004/2005, I bought my first Canon Reflex camera, which I still keep and use sometimes
12- How do you feel about the transition from film to digital?
In my opinion it was a great step for photography and art in general. I understand the nostalgia of analog, but I will never go back to it. The digital era has made me even happier.
13- Are you very hands on with the post processing of the digital files?
If you mean do I have a tidy or default working method, no, except for the first adjustments in Camera RAW or Lightroom, the rest comes up in search of my final goal. It would be boring to do always the same, I like variety and to do different things.
14- Do you have an all-time favorite camera/lens combination?
That’s easy, the one I’m going to use tomorrow, normally I use a lot the Canon 50mm and the Canon 24-105mm, sometimes the Canon 70-200mm, the one I have is of a wonderful sharpness and image quality. I have a Canon 16-35 mm that I use very little. I also like the Canon 35mm RF, an affordable lens for the EOS R system with great results.
15- Can you tell us about your last expositions you participate?
Well, I can’t say much, this year I intended to attend some of the exhibitions I have done, especially the Gautling exhibition organized by Tagree.de in October, but unfortunately, the COVID has made travel impossible. I can only speak from a distance; everything has been coordinated by emails. I can say little, in all that I have done I have been helped by the whole organization and especially the last one, the London Art Show 2020, has been good for me, there are people who have been interested in my work after it and that is important
Now, with the representation of AGORA I have several exhibitions ahead of me in New York, the first one in December. I hope that things will improve and in the coming year, I will be able to attend some of them.
16- Is there anyone, anything that you haven’t photographed yet that you’d like to?
I have never really thought about it, I know many places I would like to visit and some I will go, but not especially for photographing, for knowing them, for learning something about their culture. Then, I will logically take pictures, if the opportunity arises, I will be sure, but I will not get up early and go to photograph a sunrise because I prefer to wake up with my wife and daughter and have breakfast with them. For me it is more important to enjoy the family trip than to take pictures on the trip.
17- Do you still find photography challenging even after all this time?
Of course, every day is a challenge, now I’m doing practice in studio with flashes and lightpainting, I’ve never done it before, and I have in mind several projects, some already with sketches to do and time will bring more ideas to my mind.
18- Do you have any tips for an aspiring photographer who’s picking up a camera for the first time?
Patience, a lot of patience and practice, photographing everything you can think of and above all not stop learning a little every day, today, fortunately, the internet is full of tutorials from great photographers, some paid, others free. You can explore a lot and above all have fun, that is essential, have fun with what you are going to do.
19- Thanks a lot for your interest, you can include any details you want to talk about…
It has been a pleasure to make this interview, I hope that the readers enjoy it a little bit and thanks again, Mohamed, for this opportunity, it’s a pleasure and an honor for me.
And nothing more, many greetings from the Balearic Islands to all.
Gus
